LAMB: “The Shadow of the Panther” - it's a book about the civil rights movement, Huey Newton, his death, and black power in this country in the last 30 to 40 years. Thank you for joining us, Hugh Pearson.

  • Robert Hurst was born in Portsmouth in the UK. His varied career has been in the manufacturing industry and twenty years as a salesman. He is married with two sons and five proud granddaughters. The idea for this book came from an interest in crime detection and a distant memory of the Black Panther.
  • Jan 11, 2020  The Shadow of the Panther is the most ambitious, engaging, and balanced history of the Black Panthers to date. It is also an unflinchingly honest account of what amounts to human tragedy. Hugh Pearson's account of Huey Newton's rise to power and descent into addiction and powerlessness is set against a century-long quest for civil rights.
  • But in Hugh Pearson’s keenly observed, often brilliant, Panther-busting book, “The Shadow of the Panther,” the party founder gets stripped bare of his accouterments.
  • The first title is a story about the endangered Florida panther. The second title is an adaptation of a Chinese tiger fable. Both books are visually striking and ideal candidates for show-and-tell readings in classrooms and library story times. Panther is both a literary and a lovely looking picture book. Obviously, its creative team, American author Jonathan London and Canadian illustrator Paul Morin, share a keen and compatible interest in the natural world.

The Shadow of the Panther: Huey Newton and the Price of Black Power in America

An African American man draped out in Black Panther regalia, seated upon a wicker chair, with a spear in one hand, and an animal pelt upon the floor: this is the classic, flamboyant, self-assured image by which most of us remember Black Panther leader Huey Newton. His ideas showed that the same Newton who organized clandestine hit squads to engage in wanton murder could lay out strategies as considerate and legitimate as those of our best political and economic consultants. Hellbent on destroying himself, Newton also seemed determined to plunge the Panthers into the tumultuous flames of his own self-conjured financial destruction. Newton hustled prostitution rings for money, savagely beat a fortune teller for dealing in Tarot cards, as she hovered over his future. Born and bred in racist Oakland, the Panthers also came to awareness during the years immediately following World War II.

I suppose it is a bit odd to be reviewing a little noticed book that came out about 20 years ago. Sometimes very good books get ignored. He mentioned the Pearson book in the review. There are not many books or articles about the Panthers in the balanced, shades of gray category. Explosive is too mild a word with which to describe this book.
