Place your right hand behind you holding the back of the handrail up flush and even with the fence.

- The measurements are for a standard 2-1/4 inch stair rail using a standard 1-1/4 inch baluster or spindle. Yours may differ. Measure the width of your stair rail and baluster before cutting the slot. Sand the edges of the cut lightly with 100-grit sandpaper to remove sharp edges and splinters. Cut and place 1/2-inch thick hardwood fillets at the top and bottom between each spindle during assembly for the most convenient installation. If there's a noticeable crack between the fillet and the spindle, bevel the ends of the fillets slightly with a hand-sanding block.
